The Greatest Prophets of Islam!

In last week’s issue, we asked about the four greatest prophets aside from our beloved Prophet Muhammad (SAW). As promised, we shed light on this in this article.

He has ordained for you ˹believers˺ the Way which He decreed for Noah, and what We have revealed to you ˹O Prophet˺ and what We decreed for Abraham, Moses, and Jesus, ˹commanding:˺ “Uphold the faith, and make no divisions in it.” What you call the polytheists to is unbearable for them. Allah chooses for Himself whoever He wills, and guides to Himself whoever turns ˹to Him˺.

(Surah Ash-Shuraa 42:12)

The five greatest prophets of Allah were Prophet Muhammad (SAW), Prophet Nuh (AS), Prophet Ibrahim (AS), Prophet Musa (AS), and Prophet 'Isa (AS), who had divine books and independent teachings revealed to them. In this article, we learn about the latter four.

Prophet Nuh (AS)

Prophet Nuh (AS) was chosen by Allah to be the first messenger to deliver divine teachings to humanity. He preached about believing in one God and encouraged people to reject idol worship and treat each other fairly. Despite facing opposition from many, he persisted in his mission, eventually guiding a small group of believers. When a great flood came, wiping out those who refused to listen, Prophet Nuh (AS) and his followers were saved to start anew.

Prophet Ibrahim (AS)

After Prophet Nuh (AS), despite other prophets trying to guide people, many continued to worship multiple gods and idols. Then came Prophet Ibrahim (AS), who questioned why people worshipped idols. He boldly rejected idol worship and declared his belief in one God, starting a lifelong mission to spread monotheism. When he destroyed idols, he faced a trial by fire, but Allah saved him miraculously. Prophet Ibrahim (AS) later moved to Syria and Palestine, where he kept preaching about one God. He had two sons, Isaac and Ishmael, who settled in Arabia and spread monotheism there. Ishmael and his mother were taken to Hijaz by Prophet Ibrahim (AS), where they built the Ka'bah and established the Hajj pilgrimage. Prophet Ibrahim (AS) is considered the father of monotheistic religions and was the first to use the terms "Islam" and "Muslims" for believers.

Prophet Musa (AS)

Prophet Musa (AS) was an important prophet who received special laws and guidance from Allah. His life started dramatically when his mother saved him from Pharaoh's order to kill all Hebrew baby boys by placing him in a river. He grew up in Pharaoh's palace but later had to flee after accidentally killing someone. Prophet Musa (AS) settled in Madyan, got married, and lived peacefully for years until he was called to return to Egypt. There, he faced Pharaoh's stubbornness despite performing miracles, but eventually led his people to freedom, parting the Red Sea to escape Pharaoh's army. After this incredible event, Prophet Musa (AS) received divine teachings and established laws for his people to follow.

Prophet 'Isa (AS)

Prophet 'Isa (AS) was one of the greatest prophets, given special laws and a book by Allah. His birth was extraordinary, as his mother Maryam was visited by the angel Jibril who told her about him. Prophet 'Isa (AS) even spoke as a baby, defending his mother from false accusations and announcing his role as a prophet. As he grew up, 'Isa (as) spread the teachings of earlier prophets, like Prophet Musa (AS), with some changes, and sent out followers to help. Unfortunately, his own community tried to harm him, but Allah saved him by making someone else look like him, who was then crucified instead. The Qur'an mentions the book given to 'Isa (as), called the "Injil", which is different from the later Gospels written about his life.

It is Allah Who has raised the heavens without pillars—as you can see—then established Himself on the Throne. He has subjected the sun and the moon, each orbiting for an appointed term. He conducts the whole affair. He makes the signs clear so that you may be certain of the meeting with your Lord.

And He is the One Who spread out the earth and placed firm mountains and rivers upon it, and created fruits of every kind in pairs. He covers the day with night. Surely in this are signs for those who reflect.

And on the earth there are ˹different˺ neighbouring tracts, gardens of grapevines, ˹various˺ crops, palm trees—some stemming from the same root, others standing alone. They are all irrigated with the same water, yet We make some taste better than others. Surely in this are signs for those who understand.
