Navigating the Husband's Responsibilities with Divine Guidance!
In Islam, we are entrusted with dual sets of responsibilities: those owed to Allah and those owed to others. Fulfilling our duties to others, encompassing relationships with parents, siblings, spouses, and more, is integral to meeting the responsibilities bestowed upon us by Allah. However, the challenge arises when Shaitan leads us to forget our obligations and redirects our focus towards asserting our rights. This diversion hinders the harmonious fulfilment of both sets of responsibilities, emphasizing the need for steadfast adherence to our duties as commanded by Allah.
In a Khutbah given by Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan outlines that Muslims have dual responsibilities: towards Allah and towards people. While obligations to Allah are straightforward, human relationships, like marital bonds, are more intricate. Ustadh Khan emphasizes that failing in responsibilities to others is also a failure before Allah.
According to Surah An-Nisa (4:34):
Men are the caretakers of women, as men have been provisioned by Allah over women and tasked with supporting them financially. And righteous women are devoutly obedient and, when alone, protective of what Allah has entrusted them with. And if you sense ill-conduct from your women, advise them ˹first˺, ˹if they persist,˺ do not share their beds, ˹but if they still persist,˺ then discipline them ˹gently˺. But if they change their ways, do not be unjust to them. Surely Allah is Most High, All-Great.
The focus here is on the beginning of the verse, Arrijaal qawwamuna ‘ala an-nisaa (men are the caretakers of women).
The keyword qawwam, comes from the root word qiyam, and one of the names of Allah, Qayoom, is also derived from this word.
In the context of marriage, the verse (4:34) highlights the concept of "qawwamuna," which Nouman Ali Khan interprets as involving activity, commitment, consistency, reliability, and conferring value, rather than mere authority.
For instance, Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan illustrates a scenario where a wife faces challenges and mistreatment from her husband's family. Despite the significant responsibility that Islam places on the husband towards his own parents, Ustadh Khan underscores the husband's role in acting as a protective shield for his wife while also fulfilling his duties as a good son. Both responsibilities are explicitly outlined in the Quran, compelling the husband to establish clear boundaries that safeguard his wife, even though he is obligated to his parents. It's important to note that, contrary to a common misconception, Islam does not require the wife to obey the husband's parents.
Islam condemns abuse (including physical, emotional, and spiritual), and husbands are urged to actively nurture relationships, protect their spouses, and serve as mentors and advisers.

Hikky's Middle Eastern Cafe & Grill
Hikky's Middle Eastern Cafe and Grill, renowned for its signature Hikky Snack Pack and delectable Iraqi cuisine, has captured the hearts of the northern suburbs of Perth. Distinguishing itself from the conventional Lebanese kebab shops, this cafe offers a unique culinary experience. Our delightful conversation with the visionary behind it all, Hikky, unravelled the captivating tale behind this beloved establishment, cherished by an ever-expanding community of devoted patrons.
Who is Hikky?
Hikmath, fondly known as Hikky by both friends and loyal patrons, embarked on his Australian journey in 1990 at the age of 19, hailing from Iraq. His source of inspiration is none other than his father, a figure whose teachings centred around the values of humility despite achieving success and societal standing. Rooted in a professional training in hospitality, Hikky started his career in the industry as a dish washer and cleaner at the tender age of 19, displaying a commendable commitment to paying the price for his aspirations. Balancing work with studies, he embraced the challenging but rewarding journey towards his goals. | ![]() Hikky |
On recognising the importance of hard work, Hikky said,
"if I want to be something, I have to pay the price, and the price is the painful process".
His journey led him to prestigious establishments like the Hyatt Regency, Ritz Carlton, and Sheraton hotels, where he honed the art of delivering five-star service to customers. In the international arena, Hikky enriched his experience by working in various European settings for several years, adding an international flair to his expertise.
Driven by a genuine affinity for people and a creative spirit, Hikky found his calling in the hospitality industry, where his passion for service and innovation thrives.
Hikky's philosophy
Transitioning through various tiers of establishments, from cafes to restaurants such as Dome and Sizzlers, Hikky assumed managerial roles that exposed him to diverse customer service standards. This range of experiences broadened his perspective on catering to different clientele.
At the core of Hikky's philosophy is an unwavering commitment to customer service that transcends demographics. Whether interacting with adults or teenagers, individuals in formal suits or everyday attire, his approach remains consistent: to create a welcoming and friendly environment for everyone, irrespective of their background.
In doing so, he actively addresses and challenges prevailing Muslim stereotypes by embodying the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (SAW). Hikky emphasizes the virtues of kindness, generosity, and patience, as exemplified by the Prophet (SAW).
In aligning his actions with these teachings, Hikky strives to offer not just good customer service but also flavoursome food that reflects the essence of what he has imbibed from the teachings of the Prophet (SAW). His culinary creations are not tailored solely for a specific demographic; rather, he aims to present food that is both appealing and affordable to a broader community.
Notably, Hikky's goal is not to deliver take-away or elevate his offerings to a 5-star standard. Instead, he aspires to provide a taste of home-cooked authenticity, resonating with the comforting essence of shared meals within a community.
The home of the HSP
Originating as Babylon Cafe and Grill, the inception of Hikky's Middle Eastern Cafe and Grill was marked by a deliberate decision to transcend the conventional kebab shop model and avoid excessive expansion. Hikky envisioned a unique blend of kebab standards and authentic Iraqi traditional cuisine, offering a distinctive culinary experience.
The journey to finding the perfect location was not without its challenges. While searching for a place to rent, Hikky and his wife, Kim, stumbled upon an opportunity after a visit to Dominos for some pizza. A lease sign caught their attention, prompting them to contact the agent the next day. Within a week, they secured the keys to what would become the heart of their culinary venture.
On the 16th of September 2016, the restaurant opened its doors as Babylon Cafe and Grill, a name that would later undergo a transformation to the now-familiar Hikky's. The initial months proved to be a formidable challenge, with Hikky attributing the perseverance and success to the blessings of Allah and the unwavering dedication of his wife, Kim, who stood by him during the toughest times.

The food
In a culinary endeavour fuelled by a desire to reclaim the authentic essence of Iraq, Hikky embarked on a mission to correct misperceptions about the country. Beyond mere sustenance, his vision sought to encapsulate the true spirit of Iraq—defined by hospitality, generosity, and an explosion of flavours.

Iraqi Night Dishes
As a testament to this commitment, Hikky introduced an exclusive culinary experience known as Iraqi Night, an intimate affair reserved for a selected number of guests eager to indulge in a complete Iraqi dinner menu. This unique initiative goes beyond monetary considerations, aiming to share the genuine warmth and flavours of Iraqi hospitality. For Hikky, it's not about profit but about creating an authentic connection with each diner.
"I really wanted to give the people the experience of Iraqi food. Because our food, we don't calculate. Because when we cook, when we serve, we do from the heart," he affirms, likening the experience to inviting guests into one's own home.
The heart of Hikky's culinary repertoire lies in the cherished family recipes passed down through generations. From his mother, grandmother, sisters, and aunties back in Iraq, these recipes serve as the foundation for the rich tapestry of Iraqi flavours he lovingly recreates in every dish. Thus, every bite at Hikky's Middle Eastern Cafe and Grill becomes a journey not only into the exquisite world of Iraqi cuisine but also a celebration of familial heritage and the heartfelt dedication that defines the essence of this beloved establishment.
