Mastering the Art of Advice: Islamic Guidance for Everyday Life

Whoever admonishes his brother in private has been sincere to him and protected his reputation.

Whoever admonishes him in public has humiliated him and betrayed him.

In today's fast-paced world of social media, it's easy to see people rushing to correct or shame others publicly. But true guidance isn't about speed; it's about how you deliver it – a principle deeply valued in Islamic teachings.

Sheikh Belal Assaad helps us understand the essence of good advice in a two-part series (links provided below). He sheds light on how to offer guidance in line with the values of Islam.

Here, we break down his insights into simple reminders for our everyday interactions, guiding us on the path of noble conduct prescribed by Islamic teachings.

Guidelines for Offering Advice:

  1. Understand the topic well before giving advice.

  2. Prioritize what needs addressing first.

  3. Ensure your advice doesn't cause more harm.

  4. Consider the context and norms before advising.

  5. Navigate situations where good and bad are intertwined.

  6. Recognize that differing opinions among scholars don't always apply to advising.

  7. Address issues that are known to the public.

  8. Focus on correcting present wrongs, not past mistakes.

  9. Pick the right moment to offer your guidance.

  10. Refrain from judging the person you're advising.

Etiquettes for Giving Advice:

  1. Be genuine in your approach.

  2. Practice patience throughout the process.

  3. Share your perspective without passing judgment.

  4. Keep the person's privacy intact during and after giving advice.

  5. Approach the situation with gentleness and compassion.

  6. Remain humble, seeking Allah's pleasure.

  7. Strive to practice what you preach, setting an example.

  8. Avoid dwelling on past wrongs; encourage positive actions instead.

  9. Be open to receiving advice just as you offer it to others.

  10. Seek guidance and support from trusted individuals when advising others.

The Holy Month of Ramadan Begins

The Fatwa Council of Australia has announced that the Holy Month of Ramadan for this year 1445H- 2024 will commence this week, on Tuesday, 12th of March 2024.

Australian Fatwa Council Statement on Ramadan 2024

Similarly, Moonsighting Australia has stated that they will be performing moonsighting this Monday, 11th March, and that Ramadan will either commence on the 12th or the 13th.

Moonsighting 2024

Ramaḍân is the month in which the Quran was revealed as a guide for humanity with clear proofs of guidance and the decisive authority. So whoever is present this month, let them fast. But whoever is ill or on a journey, then ˹let them fast˺ an equal number of days ˹after Ramaḍân˺. Allah intends ease for you, not hardship, so that you may complete the prescribed period and proclaim the greatness of Allah for guiding you, and perhaps you will be grateful.

(Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:185)

Jazak Allah Khairan, May Allah Reward You Goodness!
