A gem of a resource for deeper understanding of the Quran and discover yummy "dates"!
Assalaamualaikum, Welcome to Issue #13 of the Salam ☪️ Perth newsletter.
As we are getting closer to the blessed month of Ramadan, we are reminded that in addition to fasting, it is also the month of the Quran. In this issue we explore beyond the act of reading and how to reflect on the Quran and to connect to it at a deeper level.
We also kick-off this year’s first wordsearch challenge. And what better way than to savour the tastes of Ramadan by exploring the various types of dates.

A resource for deeper understanding of the Quran
As the holy month of Ramadan is approaching, we are reminded of, as well as drawn to the Quran, Alhamdulillah. Afterall, Ramadan is the month in which the Quran was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (SAW). It is a month where all of us do our best to increase our efforts in reading the Quran. In this article, we would like to share a resource that will also add to the quality of our interaction with the Quran.
Reciting the Quran from cover-to-cover in Arabic as revealed is an important and significant milestone for a Muslim. However, Arabic is not the native language of the majority of Muslims that read the Quran. Nor do most non-native Arabic speakers understand the language. Therefore, as stressed by Dr Saeed, reading the Quran from cover-to-cover in English, or in one's native language if available, should be essential and also celebrated.
"If we don't understand the meaning of the Quran, then we cannot act upon the Quran"
There are a number of translations of the Quran in Arabic, and have been translated in numerous languages. Quran.com is a valuable resource as a one-stop for these translations. Additionally, there are multiple apps on all major platforms as well.
Dr Saeed discusses about The Global Quranic Calendar project hosted by Quran.com. The project is about weekly readings of the translation of Quran. The project has organised the translations into manageable chunks of 46 parts.
If your choice is English language, then they also provide a downloadable PDF file with further commentary that has made the translations even more accessible.
Weekly resources to explore the meanings of the Quran
In addition to the translations, the project also provides a link to a YouTube video and audio podcast for each weekly reading. The video and podcast episodes are hosted by Dr Saeed with a small group of people who have done the reading and clarify their thoughts in each episode.
Undoubtedly, it is immensely beneficial if we increase the amount of our recitation of the Quran, especially in the month of Ramadan. Furthermore, if we also improved the quality of our relationship with the words of Allah, we could reap the benefits even more. Insha Allah, the resource we have shared in this article could be a practice in preparation of Ramadan, as well as a lasting habit beyond.
